Inverness was granted its city status in 2000 and is the capital of the Highlands with an enviable location on the banks of the River Ness.

With a population of 54000 the city itself is small, compact and easy to get around and hosts one of the world's biggest Highland Games.

How to get there

Travel by air

Inverness Airport, just 20 minutes from the city centre, handles scheduled daily flights to and from airports throughout the UK and Ireland.

Travel by road

The A9 links the north od Scotland and Inverness with Edinburgh and Glasgow. It continues north across the Kessock Bridge to the Northern Highlands of Scotland.

To the east, the A96 links Inverness to the seaside holiday resort of Nairn and on to Aberdeen.

To the south-west, the A82 winds along beautiful Loch Ness to Fort Augustus and on to Fort William, and linking with the route to the romantic Isle of Skye.

Regular buses link Inverness with other Highland communities and express coaches run to the main cities of Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom.

Travel by rail

Inverness enjoys good rail links to every point of the compass – north to the Caithness towns of Thurso and Wick, east to Nairn and Aberdeen, south via Aviemore to Glasgow, Edinburgh and London, and west on the famous scenic route to Kyle of Lochalsh and the Isle of Skye.
